The Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre (WHI) established the Department for Professional Development primarily to offer a broad spectrum of short training courses and events that deliver high-quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in healthcare delivery, clinical practice, medical research and quality improvement in the field of fertility medicine and gynaecological endoscopic surgery.
The Department’s training programmes are designed to offer opportunities for physicians, nurses, embryologists, pharmacists, veterinarians, biomedical scientists and other healthcare providers to maintain or improve their knowledge, skills, competency and professionalism in the fields of gynaecology, endoscopy, Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), andrology and clinical embryology. The goal is to provide better service for patients, the public or the profession.
The Departments uses a variety of formats including online, face-to-face, hands-on training or in a hybrid format, to deliver its training programs and make learning flexible, effective, and convenient. Depending on organizational needs, training programmes can be customized.
To provide innovative and unique education and training for healthcare professionals to advance continuing professional development and practice in the field of fertility medicine and gynaecological endoscopic surgery.
The Department has the following main educational objectives:
a) To provide professional development programs and continuous educational training for gynaecologists and obstetricians, surgeons, physicians, andrologists, embryologists, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners through various in-house and in-country trainings, workshops, symposiums, etc. on topical subjects in the area of fertility medicine and gynaecological endoscopic surgery;
b) To liaise with other National and International agencies to deliver professional development courses on common areas of concern in the field of fertility medicine and endoscopic surgery;
c) To increase knowledge and strengthen effective professional practices of gynaecologists, obstetricians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable and experienced in gynaecological disorders;
d) To adapt professional standards to the Ugandan context and therefore apply them to the training of gynaecologists and other healthcare practitioners in the field of fertility medicine and endoscopic surgery; and
e) To provide sustainable professional development programs in accordance with educational development standards in order to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health and any other relevant stakeholders.
The CPD committee members are made up of representative of the defined target audience and reflect the principles of inter-professional education. This is to ensure that the learning needs of the target audience are identified, recognized and addressed. All committee members have substantial input into the programme development including content, speaker selection and format.
The CPD Coordinator is a member of the CPD committee and is involved in the planning, developing and delivering of the activity and to ensure that the CPD Program standards are maintained.
Partnerships and affiliations are recognized as being vital to WHI’s ability to achieve its mission of leadership in the field of gynaecologic endoscopy ,fertility medicine and excellence in patient care.
